Information for Current Clients
Make sure your actions are helping your case...
This is advice for all my clients regarding what they can do to help themselves during the pendency of their criminal or civil case.
Always dress appropriately when in court.
The worst thing you can do is show up as if you did not care. Wearing shorts and flip-flops with a T-shirt that has a marijuana leaf on it will not help your case. When you have to be in court always wear pants (not jeans) and a long sleeve dress shirt with an appropriate tie. If you are a woman you have more options. A pants or skirt outfit will work - no moo-moos. Descent dress shoes are also favorable over tennis shoes or boat shoes.
Don't over do it. Be conservative in what you wear. Don't wear a lot of jewelry or flashy accessories. Avoid trying to be the best dressed in court - that is not the look you are wanting. Try to blend in with a conservative business look.
When addressing the court.
If you are addressed by the judge it helps to appear that you are paying attention. Listen to what is being asked. Respond appropriately. Responses should be in complete grammatically correct sentences or with a "Yes" or a "No" not a "yeah" or "uh-ah." You should address the court as "Ma'am," "Sir," or "your Honor." Speak loudly and clearly.
Stay in touch with us.
After you have hired us it is necessary to remain in contact with us. We communicate with you very often by email. However, never be afraid to call and ask what is going on. More importantly, if there is a scheduled court date that you must attend call us the day before and confirm the time and place. We will always try to keep you abreast of your case so please do the same for us about you. If you cannot make a court date it is vital that you tell us this as soon as possible. This means days before or minutes before - as soon as you know.
Do not put yourself in a position that puts you in a bad light.
Do not do anything that can come back and haunt you in court. Do not post inappropriate pictures on your Facebook or MySpace accounts (or any other social networking websites). Do not write anything there that you don't want heard in court. Refrain from any "hobbies" or "habits" that are currently against the law. Do not violate any court order regarding pretrial release.
If you have a question about anything during your case, ask.
As your attorney we are here to answer your questions. Feel free to ask. We want the best outcome in your case. Remember that there are many factors to a favorable outcome and they all don't depend on the facts or legal issues of the case. You can help yourself by following the advice above.
If you are placed on Probation or Community Control
If the result of your case you are placed on probation or community control [supervision] then please review the general conditions of supervision, the consequences of violating supervision, and some frequently asked questions regarding supervision. We can also represent you in a hearing to try and terminate your supervision early.
