Our civil liberties are not solely in the hands of the ACLU, in fact the American Civil Liberties Union is only one facet of the number of organizations that exist in an effort to protect our civil rights.  This country was founded on the belief that each of us are born with inalienable Rights that the government must abide by!  At the beginning (circa 1789) we the people had many Rights.  Over the last 200+ years (and especially since WWII) the government - the system that was created to ensure our Rights - has, naturally, watered-down our Rights.  Why?

Those who have been once intoxicated with power, and have derived any kind of emolument from it, even though but for one year, can never willingly abandon it.

Those we so effortlessly elect from our ranks are soon and inevitably corrupted by human nature.  That is why we must watch them.
